「在那地方」 Tagore, Gitanjali，泰戈爾《頌歌集》選

我的父母在少年時代戀愛的時光，彼此以泰戈爾的詩句相贈。他們曾在玉山神學院前的鯉魚潭裡游泳，然後坐在大石頭上讀泰戈爾的詩。那是一個奇妙的夏天的工作營記憶。
我們出生之後，第一本的相本裡，父母也都細細地加上泰戈爾的詩句為註記
（主要是《新月集》和《漂鳥集》的短詩）。
人生走到轉折處，在病中重讀泰戈爾詩集，發現父母所傳給我們的信仰與美感，有很大的一部份是在泰戈爾的熏陶下的宗教心，那是一種正直、開闊、充滿愛的宇宙永恆之心。

《頌歌集》（《吉檀迦利》）是如此精彩深刻，它讓我的心在面對死亡時，活了起來。

在那地方，心沒有恐懼，頭抬得起來；
在那地方，知識是自由的；
在那地方，世界不曾被狹窄的家國之牆分裂為碎片；

在那地方，話語來自真理深處；

在那地方，不懈的努力伸手朝向完美；

在那地方，理智的清流，不曾迷失在僵化的積習之可怕荒漠；

在那地方，心靈被你引導前進，成為不斷變得開闊的思想和行動--進入自由的天國，我的父啊！讓我的國家醒來！

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;

Where knowledge is free;

Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;

Where words come out from the depth of truth;

Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;

Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;

Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action---

Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.
